23 year old Babulal has been walking on his hands all his life. As a child he suffered from Post polio residual paralysis due to which the lower half of his body was paralysed. His legs were badly bent so he had to use his hands to push his body on the floor. Babulal and his family had given up all hopes of any improvement in his mobility. They felt there was no hope for him and he cannot be treated. It was a big challenge for the staff of Arushi – Leonard Cheshire Disability Samawesh Project to convince him and his family members that a corrective surgery will help Babulal move better. After several counseling sessions they finally agreed for corrective surgery at Narayana Seva Samsthan (NSS) Udaipur.
In May 2009 he underwent first surgery on his left leg. Post surgery it was difficult for him to come to the therapy unit at Arushi for physiotherapy as his house was 12 kms away from the center in Nayakheda. So alternatively project facilitated a therapeutic setup at his residence using ropes, iron beam and other locally available materials. With regular physiotherapy there was remarkable improvement in his left leg. Babulal was very happy and agreed to undergo a second surgery on his right leg as well which was done at the same center in September 2009. Once again he was provided with regular physiotherapy. He was provided with calipers standing frame. After intense training, physiotherapy and exercises Babulal was able to stand on his feet with support and started walking for the first time with the help of crutches. Project provided Babulal with a wheelchair and a tricycle. Now Babulal comes to Arushi center for physiotherapy on the tricycle.
From initial reluctance for treatment to independent mobility Babulal has come a long way. In fact now Babulal is a very active member in the community. He participates in the Panchayat elections and leads awareness campaigns in the village. His confidence and self esteem commands great deal of respect from his friends and peers. His family is also very proud at his activities. He is continuing with his studies and undergoing training in computers. Today Babulal is looking forward to a bright future.
